The Superpowers of Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) in Career & Business
It's no mistake that you’re here at this pivotal time of great change in the world; you were born to make a true impact with your depth, wisdom and authenticity.
Growing up I remember always being told that I was ‘too sensitive’ that I should ‘get over it’ and ‘lighten up’. I feel things deeply, often to the point where I am so overcome with emotion that I find it difficult to focus on anything else.
I am prone to overstimulation, to the point of burnout on numerous occasions.
I am incredibly sensitive to other people’s emotions which means I can walk into any room and read the energy instantaneously. Intuitively, I adjust myself like a thermostat to fit in with whatever the mood calls for.
For the longest time, I viewed my sensitivities as weaknesses, believing they made me inadequate—like there was something fundamentally wrong with me.
I had no idea that these sensitivities, or as I like to call them - superpowers - could be harnessed and used to my advantage.
As I’m sure you've likely experienced, these traits are not embraced or celebrated by large parts of our society today.
So, if you’ve up until now viewed your sensitivity as anything less than the gifts they are, I don’t blame you.
In fact, it can often feel like your sensitivities are some kind of fatal flaw. But I can assure you that your sensitive gifts are very much needed in our world today.
While your sensitivities may make you more susceptible to absorbing others' emotions and moods, often leading to overstimulation, you can also learn to channel these traits to your benefit.
When you take a closer look, you’d be surprised at how many people who have made significant contributions to the world are in fact highly sensitive.
Some of the world’s most acclaimed deep thinkers, artists and creatives, musicians and intellectuals including Mother Theresa, Gandhi, Alanis Morissette, Albert Einstein, Eleanor Roosevelt, Nicole Kidman, Heath Ledger, Vincent Van Gough - all have high sensitivity and empathic qualities in common.
And how vastly different would the world be without their magnificent contributions?
When aligned with our true nature, we are naturally intuitive, creative visionaries who are deeply curious and highly empathic healers.
So how can we leverage these superpowers to fuel our career and business?
Let’s take a closer look…
HSP’s are Naturally Intuitive Visionaries
Because we’re so attuned to the world around us, and thanks to our depth of processing, we’re naturally intuitive. We pick up on subtleties in our environment and in other people, without them even needing to say a word. We can feel other people’s emotions and when we tune into this frequency, it’s in many ways, like having a sixth sense.
As a result, we have a keen sense of what feels right—whether it’s a career move, business opportunity, or creative direction. We quickly recognize patterns, trends, and unspoken dynamics, allowing us to make smart decisions without needing endless external validation.
Our natural instinct for alignment helps us to build careers and businesses that truly fit who we are, rather than following the crowd.
Our visionary nature means we have an innate ability to help anticipate future trends and advancements in a creative and imaginative way.
It’s no surprise then that our perceptive nature and ability to notice patterns of thinking can put our vivid imaginations to use by dreaming up big ideas and planning about what the future could look like.
HSP’s thrive in roles like coaching, leadership, innovation, and business strategy because we can sense what will work before others see it, which is a major advantage in our rapidly-changing world.
HSP’s have great empathy for people.
Given our ability to feel others emotions, we care deeply for people and their well-being. This makes us exceptional at building trust and cultivating deep relationships with clients, colleagues, and customers.
Our ability to read between the lines means we can anticipate needs and offer solutions that truly serve others.
In leadership, our compassionate approach fosters loyalty, collaboration, and a positive work culture.
We’re natural born nurturers and in action, this makes us phenomenal coaches, consultants, therapists, educators, customer experience experts and brand storytellers because we understand and speak directly to what people truly need.
HSP’s are deeply curious, with great attention to detail.
As introspective beings, we have a rich and complex inner world. This leads us to being deeply curious, examining and questioning why the world is the way it is.
It’s not unusual to get into deep conversations about the workings of the universe, and coming up with utopian theories on how different the world could be if we operated in a more efficient and harmonious way.
We also notice what others don’t, whether it’s the subtle wording of an email, the tone of a conversation, or the fine-tuning needed to make something exceptional.
This strength makes us great at crafting high-quality work, refining strategies, and improving experiences in ways that feel polished and intentional.
Our deeply curious and meticulous nature allows us to explore possibilities and bring to life things like beautifully designed websites, impactful branding, well-researched strategies, and seamless customer experiences.
In career and business, we can excel in roles like editors, UX designers, strategists, researchers, and high-level consultants, where precision, curiosity and thoughtfulness make all the difference.
HSP’s are highly creative and imaginative.
It’s not surprising that many HSP’s are profoundly creative.
Our introspective nature; tendency to daydream and get stuck in our heads with our vivid imaginations lends itself to being creative. We can use this to our advantage by seeing connections and nuances that others miss, allowing us to create meaningful, impactful work.
Our natural ability to think in visual and abstract ways, means that pretty much anything we can dream up, we can bring to life.
Our deep imaginations can bring fresh perspectives to projects, making us natural problem-solvers, artists, writers, designers, and strategists.
In business, this creativity helps us build authentic brands, craft thoughtful content, and provide unique offerings that deeply resonate with people.
We thrive as entrepreneurs and creatives because we instinctively bring innovation and depth to our work. This originality helps us stand out in saturated markets.
HSP’s are designed for success.
It is no mistake that you’re here at this pivotal time of great change in the world; you were born to make a true impact with your depth, wisdom and authenticity.
When we intentionally design careers and businesses around our natural strengths, we thrive without burnout and create work that is deeply fulfilling and truly valuable.
